Rhine Class arrived safely and we are all very excited to have already begun warrior training in Middle Earth.
Axe throwing and archery before lunch helped us work up an appetite. Then we are off to the woods to fight the dragon and rescue the treasure. Luckily Gandalf the wizard has arrived to lend a hand against the goblins.
We will definitely sleep well tonight!

Published 27/03/19Today archaeologist, Afrikana Smith came to talk to Rhine about his work in the hot, dense jungles of the Central America.
He was able to bring along some of the artefacts (usually located in museums) which included an array of weapons from knives to axes!
We took part in a dramatisation of the Old World (Europe) and New World (Americas etc) clash, resulting in the take over by the Spanish.
We trained to be Maya warriors and hunters as well as playing a game of Ulama where in Mayan times the winning or losing team would be given to the Underworld!

As part of our trip to We the Curious Rhine Class took part in the 'Launch It Show' to support their curiosity and learning in Science and the World around them.
They investigated how propulsive forces and explosions were used to launch Yuri Gagarin, the first person to travel into space. Click to see how a hydrogen balloon reacted with oxygen and release lots of energy.

Published 13/12/18We were warmly welcomed by the residents and staff at Athelstan House in Malmesbury. The children gave a 30 minute performance of Christmas songs. We were also given a tour of the facilities at the home, we met the pet chickens and had an opportunity to talk to residents about their home and the activities they get involved in. We have been invited back to share in some of those activities in 2019.

Published 09/11/18This week Rhine class have been commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War as part of a whole school focus with a series of hands on activities and events.
Today the Year 6 pupils contributed to the Remembrance Service by placing wooden crosses with poppies on the graves of those who have given their lives in service to their country. We were very proud to see our pupils paying tribute with such respect. It was both emotive and powerful and we hope it is something they will remember for years to come.
In English we read Michael Morpurgo’s new book ‘Poppy Field,’ an illustrated story celebrating the poppy's history. The story, set in Flanders Fields, led to us reading and analysing the famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae. We discussed the themes and messages within the poem and were impressed by the children’s empathy. Finally the children composed their own poems to express their feelings.
This year, the focus is on saying thank you to everyone that supported efforts during WW1. This fed in to our Mixed Media art work that provided a poignant way to reflect and remember.
Some examples of our Mixed Media:
In History we discussed sources of evidence and chose a question/topic about WW1 to research. This helped the children to understand the impact of war on those involved, including the women, children and animals. We were very impressed with the depth of understanding and detailed knowledge.
